Rust Engineer — EMEA

Rust Engineer | Europe Remote | €80,000-€140,000

Ftyvbygs8 are working with a fast-growing, early-stage defence technology company who are growing rapidly.

Defence technology is dominated by vendor lock-in. Integrations cost a fortune and the vendor keeps ownership of the work. They're fixing that with an open data layer for defence, built entirely in Rust and largely open source.

This is a chance to join a small, senior team early. The platform runs from a single device at the edge to large networks of sites, so the bar on performance, correctness and security is high.

You'll own whole parts of the system and work directly with the customers using it.

What you'll work on:

• Core platform services in Rust, taken from design through to production

• Open-source connectors that integrate third-party defence systems and data sources

• Async Rust and Tokio services that have to stay correct and fast under real load

• Distributed, networked and message-based systems, from edge devices to multi-site deployments

• Deployment tooling, plus time on site with customers and partners during trials

Core requirements:

• Strong production Rust (2+ years), with 5+ years Software Engineering experience

• Understanding of how Rust works under the hood, not just how to write it

• Solid systems fundamentals: Linux, networking, concurrency, distributed systems

• Clear communicator who learns quickly, and is happy for their code to be read publicly

Bonus requirements:

• Background in HFT, trading or crypto trading infrastructure

• Experience in defence, or as a field or forward deployed engineer

• Familiarity with cryptography, PKI or defence data standards

• Open-source contributions, or experience at an early-stage startup

Remote across the UK and EU, with regular time together in person and travel to customer sites.

AI-assisted development is used heavily, but you'll need to understand and validate everything you ship. They want people who are genuinely after more ownership in a smaller company.
