Coinbase is a remote-first company focused on increasing economic freedom. The company brings together teams working to build the future of finance and expects employees to work in a high-performance environment.
Although Coinbase operates as a remote-first organization, it is not fully remote-only. Employees are expected to come together quarterly for in-person working sessions known as "surges."
About the Role
Coinbase is seeking a Staff Software Engineer, Native Mobile to join the App Infra team within the Consumer & Business group. This role will help lead the company's greenfield native mobile app rewrite, replacing the existing React Native application with native Swift and Kotlin builds.
The team is using AI-driven agentic workflows to translate and rebuild core application surfaces for millions of customers. You will bring deep iOS or Android expertise to guide architecture decisions, establish engineering standards, own quality outcomes, and translate organizational strategy into technical execution as product teams transition to native development.
Key Responsibilities
• Own the architecture of core native application surfaces built with Swift and Kotlin, establishing the technical foundation for product teams transitioning to native development.
• Define module boundaries, responsibilities, visibility rules, and compile-time checks to create an enforceable architecture that supports code quality and scalability.
• Remain hands-on across the team's codebases by writing and reviewing code in depth.
• Lead agentic code translation workflows and develop high-quality automated systems for recurring migration tasks before requesting additional headcount.
• Determine which parts of the code translation pipeline should be automated and which require human involvement.
• Own developer experience for the native codebase by improving build speeds, local development workflows, and CI/CD reliability.
• Define architectural patterns and documentation that support an effective native mobile development experience.
• Shape the dual-app agentic synchronization strategy during the transition, prioritizing high-impact outcomes and designing daily agent automations and human review processes to keep native and React Native codebases aligned.
• Provide leadership across Coinbase's mobile engineering community by establishing best practices and mentoring L3–L5 mobile engineers across teams.
• Encourage collaboration, connection, and support among mobile engineers throughout the organization.
Required Qualifications
• At least 8 years of iOS or Android mobile software engineering experience, with expertise in Swift/iOS or Kotlin/Android.
• Working proficiency in the other mobile platform and willingness to develop cross-platform fluency, as the team works across both iOS and Android.
• A track record of delivering high-quality mobile applications at scale, with direct ownership of architecture decisions, performance budgets, and release quality.
• Deep understanding of mobile performance optimization, including cold start, frame stability, scroll jank, and time to interaction.
• Experience profiling and tuning mobile applications across different device tiers, including low-end Android devices.
• Demonstrated ability to translate organizational strategy into team-level technical execution.
• Experience building alignment with cross-team and cross-functional partners and securing commitment to migration timelines and quality standards.
• Experience with AI-assisted code generation or LLM-driven development workflows, including sound judgment about what should be automated and what requires human review.
• Experience improving developer experience through build systems, CI/CD pipelines, and release tooling, with improvements adopted beyond the immediate team.
• Ability to use generative AI responsibly, maintain human oversight, and deliver business-ready outputs with measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
