About the Company

Super Dispatch is a technology company focused on improving the vehicle transportation industry through digital tools and connected transportation solutions. Its platform supports carriers, shippers, and brokers across the U.S. vehicle transportation market.

The company's product suite includes Carrier TMS, Shipper TMS, SuperPay, and Super Loadboard. These tools are designed to simplify auto transport operations, reduce paperwork, save time, minimize costs, and improve operational efficiency.

Super Dispatch operates as a fully distributed, remote-first team.

About the Role

Super Dispatch is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, build, and operate the backend services that power its platform for carriers and shippers in the U.S. vehicle transportation industry.

As part of an agile team, you will take ownership of technical decisions involving architecture, APIs, and infrastructure while maintaining production reliability, communicating technical trade-offs, and mentoring other engineers. The role involves developing and improving backend services, managing asynchronous and event-driven processes, maintaining reliable third-party integrations, and optimizing application and database performance.

Key Responsibilities

Backend Engineering and Technical Leadership

• Own multiple backend services end-to-end, including architecture, REST APIs, and databases.

• Design, build, and debug asynchronous and concurrent systems, including task queues, background workers, and event-driven workflows.

• Address system failure scenarios involving retries, ordering, idempotency, and race conditions.

• Use AI coding assistants such as Cursor and Claude Code to support design, implementation, testing, and documentation while reviewing generated output for correctness and security.

• Own third-party API integrations, including implementation, cost control, rate limiting, and ongoing maintenance.

• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers on architecture, development patterns, and production readiness.

• Contribute to backend technical standards and engineering best practices.

• Improve core services, data models, and architecture while managing technical debt and maintaining delivery progress.

• Strengthen background processing and partner integrations to prevent lost, duplicated, or incorrectly processed jobs.

• Profile and optimize application endpoints and database queries as data volumes and traffic increase.

Operational Ownership

• Own observability tools, including dashboards, alerting, and service-level agreement (SLA) tracking.

• Participate in the backend on-call rotation as the first responder for production incidents.

• Lead collaboration with the QA team on test strategy.

• Manage post-launch support and triage customer escalations.

• Monitor production systems and respond to incidents through systematic investigation and debugging.

Product and Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Translate product requirements into technical specifications and take ownership of technical scope.

• Explain architectural trade-offs involving performance, cost, and latency to stakeholders.

• Gather feedback from the Support team and improve API usability and documentation.

• Collaborate with Design and Frontend teams on API contracts and payloads.

• Document technical decisions and communicate risks proactively.

Required Qualifications

• 8–9+ years of professional backend engineering experience, including experience at a senior or staff level in a product-driven environment; 10+ years is preferred.

• Proficiency in Python with strong experience in Django and/or FastAPI.

• Strong experience with concurrent and asynchronous Python, including asyncio for in-process concurrency and Celery or similar task queues for distributed background processing.

• Ability to design, implement, and debug asynchronous systems under real production conditions.

• Experience with offline-first or unreliable-network synchronization, including optimistic updates, queue-and-replay workflows, and conflict resolution.

• Daily experience using AI coding assistants for scaffolding, refactoring, exploring unfamiliar code, and drafting tests and documentation, with the ability to critically review outputs for correctness, security, and latency.

• Hands-on experience with SQL databases such as PostgreSQL, including schema design and query optimization.

• Experience with at least one message broker or streaming platform, such as Kafka or RabbitMQ, and an understanding of delivery semantics, ordering, idempotency, and retries.

• Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and their application to system correctness and performance.

• Solid understanding of system design and microservices architecture.

• Experience writing automated unit, integration, and end-to-end tests using tools such as pytest, tox, or Playwright.

• Experience working in an Agile and/or Scrum environment.

• Comfort with CI/CD pipelines and trunk-based development, including frequent small releases.

• Experience building and maintaining REST APIs, working with WebSockets, and handling networking.

• Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Google Cloud Platform.

• Hands-on experience with observability, including monitoring, logging, and alerting, along with an understanding of SLAs and on-call readiness.

• Ability to respond calmly to production incidents and debug problems systematically.

• Experience leading projects, mentoring engineers, establishing technical standards, and contributing to team success.

• Ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders in business terms and document technical decisions.

• Advanced English skills, with strong verbal and written communication abilities.

• Ability to take ownership of outcomes, communicate proactively, and raise risks early.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Kubernetes, NoSQL databases, and cloud-native patterns.

• Exposure to Java, Spring, or similar object-oriented programming languages.

• Experience with LLM APIs, RAG systems, or other AI integrations.

• Experience with advanced cost optimization for infrastructure or external APIs.

Growth and Development

Within the First Month

• Complete Super Dispatch's company-wide onboarding program and become familiar with its culture, working practices, and products.

• Understand the functionality of Super Dispatch products, the U.S. auto transportation industry, and its competitive landscape.

• Learn how applications run in the cloud, how performance is measured, and how development and deployment are managed.

• Understand the main areas of the codebase, review existing code, and deliver an initial small feature through the code review process.

Within Three Months

• Collaborate on technical projects across teams and work with colleagues on more complex engineering challenges.

• Deliver a medium-sized feature and contribute to technical design discussions.

• Work with engineers, product managers, and designers to develop and improve the end-to-end vehicle shipping platform.

Within Six Months

• Take ownership of services and lead API design reviews.

• Architect, design, document, develop, deploy, and operate Python services for platform users, with monitoring in place.

• Become an active member of an autonomous, cross-functional agile team comprising a product manager, UX designer, frontend engineer, and QA engineer.

Within Twelve Months

• Drive architectural decisions and lead at least one major infrastructure improvement.

• Provide visible mentorship to an engineer and contribute to the team's roadmap.

• Contribute to the backend developer community by helping improve backend components across the company.
