About the Role
DX, part of Atlassian, is seeking a Principal Product Designer to lead product design across the DX platform. As an individual contributor with influence across the organization, you will partner closely with the Head of Product and Head of Engineering to shape product strategy, roadmap priorities, and the overall design direction for DX.
You will help make complex engineering data easier for customers to understand and act on by creating experiences organized around the questions different roles need to answer. This role involves leading major design initiatives from customer discovery through implementation and ongoing improvement, using AI-native workflows and code to develop prototypes and contribute directly to the production codebase. You will also establish design standards, mentor designers, and help shape how AI influences both the product experience and the team's design and development processes.
About DX
DX is a developer intelligence platform that helps engineering leaders understand how work gets done, improve developer experience, and make informed decisions about productivity and AI. It combines self-reported developer insights with data from software development systems to provide actionable information.
Design at DX
The design team works closely with Product and Engineering throughout the product development process. Designers participate in problem definition, customer research, implementation, and collaboration with go-to-market partners. The team uses AI and code to turn ideas into working solutions and contributes to the broader design community across Atlassian.
Key Responsibilities
• Set the end-to-end experience vision for DX, creating consistency across product surfaces and customer journeys while aligning with the broader Atlassian product ecosystem.
• Partner with the Head of Product and Head of Engineering to shape product strategy, roadmap priorities, and the backlog.
• Translate complex engineering data into clear experiences through information architecture, interaction design, data visualization, and analytical workflows.
• Lead customer research and involve Product and Engineering teams in developing a shared understanding of customer needs.
• Lead high-impact design initiatives from customer discovery and problem definition through implementation, quality assurance, and post-launch iteration.
• Use AI-native workflows and code to create working prototypes, communicate design intent, contribute to production, and iterate based on actual usage.
• Help shape how AI influences the DX product experience, including conversational and agentic workflows, as well as internal processes for discovering, designing, building, and shipping products.
• Define and track experience outcomes, including time to insight, task success, adoption, and customer satisfaction.
• Establish scalable design patterns and frameworks that improve consistency across DX.
• Partner with Atlassian teams to align with the Atlassian Design System and address emerging product needs.
• Work with leadership to set design priorities and assign designers to high-impact initiatives.
• Lead design syncs and critiques, provide hands-on feedback, and mentor designers across the team.
Required Qualifications
• At least 7 years of product design experience, including ownership of complex, cross-functional initiatives.
• Deep experience designing data-rich B2B SaaS products, particularly reporting or analytics experiences that balance guided recommendations with flexible self-service exploration.
• Strong skills in interaction design, information architecture, visual design, data visualization, accessibility, and systems thinking.
• Experience applying or extending design systems across complex products.
• Ability to simplify complex data and technical concepts without sacrificing analytical depth or trust.
• Strong product judgment and experience influencing strategy, roadmaps, and priorities.
• Experience leading research and translating qualitative and quantitative evidence into product direction.
• Demonstrated use of AI throughout the design process, from research and prototyping through code and iteration, along with sound judgment about where AI should influence the customer experience.
• Ability to work quickly, make practical trade-offs, and maintain high design standards with lightweight processes.
• Principal-level influence, including the ability to create clarity in ambiguous situations, align senior stakeholders, and guide designers without direct reporting authority.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills across technical, product, customer-facing, and executive audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with developer tools.
• Experience designing conversational or agentic AI products.
• Hands-on front-end development experience.
