The Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (CCBB) at 9YWeybZ PMGAugFvt5 (IU) School of Medicine is committed to conducting outstanding basic, clinical, and translational research that promotes advanced computation and informatics approaches to increase the overall understanding of normal and disease-associated biological processes, drug development, and therapeutic responses.

The Scalable Compute Archive (SCA) team builds, delivers, and operates secure scalable systems for research data management and scientific computing within the CCBB. The SCA team partners with research groups to enable better data stewardship and reproducible science by providing robust automated and maintainable infrastructure solutions.

The SCA Research Software Developer designs and maintains the infrastructure and automation pipelines that power research data management platforms and scientific software systems. This position enables seamless software delivery, reliable cloud-based deployments, and improved developer experience across a varied and collaborative environment.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain Terraform infrastructure-as-code covering multiple research platform instances, including reusable module design and promotion of changes across environments.

• Design and operate Amazon Web Services (AWS) environments with appropriate network isolation, access control, encryption, and auditability.

• Provision and maintain trusted research environments that allow researchers to analyze sensitive clinical and genomic data under governance controls.

• Maintain and extend Continuous Integration (CI) / Continuous Deployment (CD) pipelines that deploy application and infrastructure changes across cloud and on-premises environments.

• Containerize and deploy research applications, and work with software engineers to integrate application changes into production.

• Monitor, troubleshoot, and improve the availability and performance of distributed systems handling large-scale scientific datasets, including response to production incidents.

• Implement and document security controls supporting federal and university compliance requirements; follow and improve review practices for production infrastructure changes; collaborate with university security partners on reviews and assessments.

• Document and standardize deployment, monitoring, incident response, and runbook procedures so that platform operations are transferable across the team.

• Monitor cloud cost and utilization; forecast and report platform operating costs to project stakeholders and sponsors.

• Engage with researchers and technology partners to understand evolving requirements.

General Responsibilities

• Provide advanced analysis and programming related to the design, development, and support of research systems.

• Act as lead in the development and implementation of well-engineered software that supports and enriches research productivity and reliability; evolve software development and data services with the research to ensure that modern standards of reproducible code are kept.

• Act as lead in operating, monitoring, and maintaining the integrity of a broad scope of cyberinfrastructure systems (storage, cluster computing, databases, virtual machines, networks).

• Provide advanced consultation with researchers in the use of a broad set of state-of-the-art research systems, tools, and software to enable research productivity; partners with researchers to co-create and co-learn relevant computing and data capabilities.

• Connect, facilitate, and lead interactions between researchers and technology providers; provides regular communications to the systems and software/data professionals.

• Engage a broad set of researchers through support requests as a subject matter expert (i.e. email, ticketing systems, chats); recommend and establish best practice documentation, processes and procedures to remediate support request.

• Support and collaborate with researchers and other key IT (e.g. network and security) and data center partners.

• Build and maintain relationships across the various cyberinfrastructure teams to support researchers' needs in a timely manner; keep up with the pace of complex research problems.

• Enhance learning with full awareness of the local research computing and data landscape.

• Identify education opportunities in research community; help build curriculum and contributes to development and presentation of various training to researchers on basic use of cyberinfrastructure.
