About The Role

Hampton Roads Transit is seeking a talented, ambitious Graphic Designer to join its Marketing & Communications team. In this role, you will support departments across the agency by developing creative materials for print, digital, and spatial applications. You will manage multiple projects at once, taking work from initial concept through production and delivery while maintaining HRT’s brand standards.

The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, and eager to learn and grow. You will work independently and collaboratively, creating original designs as well as extending established concepts. You should value accessible, usable design and communicate effectively with colleagues, vendors, and the public. Experience or interest in motion graphics and video production for broadcast is an advantage.

The hourly wage for this position is $21.90–$27.37. This is a non-exempt position classified as non-essential personnel. Work may occasionally take place outside regular business hours, and seasonal overtime may be required to meet project demands.

Qualifications

A minimum of three years of design experience, supported by a portfolio of professional and personal projects, is required. An associate degree in design from an accredited college is required. Candidates should demonstrate strong typography and typesetting skills, an understanding of brand standards, and the ability to develop ideas into production-ready work. Experience with print, exhibition, and digital projects is expected.

Applicants must have advanced working knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat Professional, as well as PowerPoint and Microsoft Office. Proficiency with both Mac and PC systems is required. Candidates should have strong communication, writing, and basic software problem-solving skills. A valid driver’s license is required; applicants with an out-of-state license must obtain a Virginia driver’s license within 60 days of hire when applicable.

Responsibilities

Develop, prepare, and deliver high-quality artwork for print and digital use, taking projects from concept through final production. Manage multiple assignments concurrently and ensure each is completed accurately and on schedule. Create original designs and adapt existing materials consistently with HRT’s brand guidelines, with attention to accessibility, usability, typography, and detail.

Coordinate production with printing and publishing companies, external suppliers, and other partners. Communicate project requirements clearly and work effectively with HRT staff, other agencies, businesses, and members of the public. Contribute creative and innovative ideas, and continue developing skills in motion graphics and broadcast production where appropriate.

Maintain records in accordance with HRT Records Management Policies and Procedures. Follow workplace safety policies, promote safety awareness, and promptly report hazards or unsafe conditions to a supervisor, manager, or the Safety Department. Perform other duties as assigned. The role involves regular keyboard use and managing multiple deadlines; reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals with disabilities.
