BILT Inc. is a fast-growing software-as-a-service company transforming how consumers and professional technicians learn to assemble, install, maintain, program, and repair products. The company creates official 3D Intelligent Instructions for thousands of products from hundreds of innovative brands. Through BILT’s free mobile app, users can interact with animated, touch-enabled instructions designed to make complex tasks more accessible and intuitive. BILT also delivers guided work instructions for visionOS, supporting professional training and operational enablement. Its mission is to create such an empowering experience that users become promoters of the brands BILT serves.
About The Role
BILT is seeking a Principal Machine Learning Engineer to help shape the future of spatial instruction. This senior technical leadership role sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence and spatial computing, applying a distinctive collection of 3D instructional content to multimodal understanding and generation. You will help establish the AI team’s technical direction, taking on open-ended challenges that may require original research, experimentation, and new approaches rather than established playbooks.
Working closely with the Director of AI, the CTO, and other engineers, you will guide machine learning initiatives from early exploration through production deployment. This position is suited to an experienced engineer who can work autonomously, navigate ambiguity, and turn complex problems into robust systems. The role is based at BILT’s Global Brand Support Center in Grapevine, Texas, near DFW Airport and Southlake Town Square.
Qualifications
Applicants should have at least eight years of machine learning experience and a demonstrated record of delivering complex systems to production. Deep knowledge of modern deep learning frameworks is required, with PyTorch strongly preferred. Candidates should understand the architectures behind large language models, multimodal models, or related technologies well enough to adapt and extend them—not simply fine-tune existing solutions.
Strong software engineering skills are essential, including the ability to write clean, maintainable, production-quality code. You should be comfortable reading research papers, prototyping original approaches, and making progress when problems have no clear solution. The ability to independently drive projects from ambiguous requirements to working systems is important.
Experience with vision-language models, vision-language-action architectures, embodied AI, 3D understanding, CAD, spatial reasoning, computer graphics, or geometric deep learning is preferred. Familiarity with model optimization, efficient inference, and deployment at scale is also valuable. Publications, open-source contributions, demonstrated research impact, or experience as a technical lead or foundational engineer at a high-growth startup are additional advantages.
Responsibilities
Serve as the AI team’s technical anchor by guiding architectural decisions and promoting high engineering standards. Explore research-oriented problems and lead work from initial investigation and prototyping through production release. Design and build machine learning systems for multimodal understanding, generation, and spatial reasoning, adapting foundation models to BILT’s domain and data.
Develop reliable training pipelines and evaluation frameworks, and take ownership of critical model-serving infrastructure. Establish methods for measuring model quality and improving system performance. Provide technical guidance through mentoring, thoughtful code reviews, and knowledge sharing. Partner with the Director of AI and CTO to shape the technical strategy and roadmap, while monitoring advances in AI and assessing how emerging methods can benefit BILT’s products.
Benefits
This is a direct-hire opportunity to contribute to a distinctive product at the intersection of AI, 3D content, and spatial computing. You will have the opportunity to influence foundational technology, tackle challenging problems, and help define engineering practices as the AI team develops. The position is based in BILT’s Grapevine office, with convenient parking and nearby amenities. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The work involves routine computer use and may occasionally require lifting up to 25 pounds.
Equal Opportunity
BILT Inc. is a veteran-friendly, equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace. All qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, protected veteran status, disability, or any other status protected by applicable law. BILT does not discriminate on the basis of disability. Unsolicited agency resumes are not accepted, and agency fees will not be paid without a mutually agreed-upon contract.
