Pega Appian and Enterprise BPM
New York City | Monday through Thursday onsite | Friday remote
About the Role
Our client, a global investment management firm, is seeking a senior Workflow Automation Engineer to design, build, and scale its enterprise process-automation environment.
This is a hands-on individual-contributor and application-development role. You will work directly with business stakeholders to understand operational processes and build workflow, case-management, and business-process applications.
The current production environment uses Appian. We are specifically interested in experienced Pega engineers as well as Appian developers. Strong Pega candidates do not need prior Appian experience; the organization values deep BPM engineering fundamentals and provides an opportunity to expand into Appian while applying transferable expertise in workflow, case management, rules, integrations, security, and enterprise application design.
This is not an infrastructure, system-administration, project-management, or RPA-only position.
What You Will Do
• Partner directly with business stakeholders to understand operational processes, requirements, exceptions, controls, and desired outcomes.
• Design, build, test, deploy, and support enterprise workflow and case-management applications.
• Convert spreadsheet-, email-, and document-driven processes into structured, controlled applications.
• Develop process models, case lifecycles, user interfaces, data objects, business rules, reports, and integrations.
• Build intake applications, approval workflows, notifications, escalations, SLA monitoring, and operational dashboards.
• Integrate workflow applications with enterprise systems, databases, APIs, and document-management platforms.
• Design application security, role-based access, entitlements, and audit controls appropriate for a regulated environment.
• Create reusable components, development standards, testing practices, and deployment governance.
• Troubleshoot, support, and enhance existing workflow applications.
• Apply strong BPM engineering practices while learning and contributing across platforms.
• Help shape the continued growth of the organization's automation environment.
What We Are Looking For
• 6 or more years of hands-on enterprise application development, workflow engineering, business process management, case management, or process-automation experience.
• Strong recent development experience with Pega, Appian, or another comparable enterprise BPM or case-management platform.
• Demonstrated ability to design complete business applications, not only configure isolated workflows or perform platform administration.
• Experience developing process models, human-task workflows, case lifecycles, user interfaces, data models, business rules, integrations, and reports.
• Experience building REST or SOAP API integrations and connecting workflow applications with enterprise data sources.
• Experience with application security, role-based access, audit requirements, testing, release management, and deployment governance.
• Ability to work directly with business stakeholders and translate business processes into maintainable technical solutions.
• Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Interest in learning an additional enterprise BPM platform and applying transferable engineering concepts across technologies.
• Ability to work onsite in Midtown Manhattan Monday through Thursday.
Pega Experience That Translates Well
We welcome senior Pega engineers who have built and supported production applications using capabilities such as:
• Case types, stages, steps, processes, flows, assignments, work queues, and service-level agreements.
• App Studio and Dev Studio development in enterprise environments.
• Data pages, data transforms, data objects, validation, and declarative processing.
• Decision tables, decision trees, business rules, and reusable rule design.
• User interfaces, views, portals, reports, dashboards, and accessibility-conscious application design.
• Connectors, services, REST or SOAP integrations, database connectivity, and enterprise data exchange.
• Authentication, authorization, access groups, roles, privileges, and auditability.
• Rulesets, application layering, versioning, deployment pipelines, testing, and production support.
• Performance troubleshooting, maintainability, guardrail compliance, and reusable architecture.
Pega certification is helpful but not required if your hands-on technical depth is strong.
Other Relevant Platform Backgrounds
Accomplished developers from other enterprise BPM and workflow platforms may also be considered, including Camunda, IBM BAW or BPM, Bizagi, Newgen, ServiceNow App Engine, OutSystems, and Microsoft Power Platform.
• Power Platform candidates should have experience building model-driven applications with Dataverse, security, business rules, and enterprise integrations, not solely basic Power Automate flows.
• ServiceNow candidates should have hands-on application-development or App Engine experience, not solely administration, ITSM configuration, or infrastructure support.
• Camunda candidates should have strong process-orchestration, BPMN, API-integration, human-task, and enterprise application-development experience.
Strongly Preferred
• Hands-on Pega or Appian development experience in a production enterprise environment.
• Pega Certified System Architect, Senior System Architect, or Lead System Architect certification; or Appian Developer or Senior Developer certification.
• Experience automating workflows involving operations, finance, legal, tax, compliance, risk, human resources, or corporate services.
• Experience within financial services, investment management, professional services, enterprise consulting, or another complex regulated environment.
• SQL and enterprise data-integration experience.
• Experience with document management, intelligent document processing, RPA, or AI-enabled workflow capabilities.
• Experience supporting enterprise transformation, systems consolidation, or post-merger integration.
The Opportunity
This role offers significant ownership and direct interaction with business leaders. You will help identify automation opportunities, understand how the underlying business processes operate, and build solutions that improve how work moves across the organization.
For an experienced Pega engineer, this is an opportunity to broaden your platform experience without leaving enterprise workflow engineering behind. Your existing strengths in case management, process design, rules, integrations, security, and application architecture will be directly relevant as you develop Appian expertise.
Candidates do not need to come directly from investment management. We are interested in technically strong workflow developers who have worked in complex enterprise environments and can learn new business domains and technologies.
Location and Schedule
This position is based in Midtown Manhattan.
• Monday through Thursday onsite.
• Friday remote.
• Regular working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
• Candidates relocating to the New York area must be available for the onsite schedule from their first day.
