Senior PostgreSQL Database Administrator (DBA)

Location: West Los Angeles, CA (Hybrid – 3 days onsite per week)

Job Summary

We are seeking a Senior PostgreSQL DBA to manage, architect, and optimize enterprise PostgreSQL databases hosted on Microsoft Azure. This is a hands-on senior engineering role focused on high availability, disaster recovery, performance tuning, security, and production database operations.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience with Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server, production HA/DR environments, and PostgreSQL administration across Linux and Windows platforms.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain PostgreSQL high-availability and disaster recovery solutions, including active-passive and active-active replication.

• Manage Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server, read replicas, backups, recovery, and major version upgrades.

• Administer self-managed PostgreSQL databases on Azure VMs running RHEL/CentOS and Windows Server.

• Configure streaming and logical replication, Patroni, etcd, PgBouncer, and HAProxy.

• Perform advanced query optimization, indexing, partitioning, vacuum tuning, and database performance troubleshooting.

• Manage database security, access controls, encryption, patching, and compliance requirements.

• Monitor database health, troubleshoot production incidents, and lead critical database incident resolution.

• Execute database migrations, upgrades, backup and recovery testing.

• Automate database infrastructure and operations using Terraform, Bicep, Ansible, PowerShell, and scripting tools.

• Maintain technical documentation, recovery procedures, and operational runbooks.

Required Qualifications

• 8+ years of hands-on PostgreSQL database administration in production environments.

• 5+ years of experience managing PostgreSQL on Microsoft Azure, including at least 2 years with Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server.

• Proven experience designing and operating production high-availability clusters, including real-world failover scenarios.

• Hands-on experience with active-active or bi-directional replication and conflict resolution.

• Strong experience with PostgreSQL streaming replication, logical replication, replication slots, and Patroni.

• Production PostgreSQL administration on both Linux (RHEL/CentOS) and Windows Server.

• Strong knowledge of Azure networking, private endpoints, Entra ID authentication, managed identities, and Azure Monitor.

• Experience with database backup/recovery tools such as pgBackRest or Barman.

• Advanced SQL query tuning, indexing, partitioning, performance optimization, and major version upgrades.

• Experience with Terraform or Bicep, Azure CLI, PowerShell, and CI/CD workflows.

• Ability to lead critical production incidents and participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Microsoft Azure Database Administrator (DP-300) or Azure Solutions Architect (AZ-305) certification.

• Experience with PostgreSQL 18/19 features.

• Experience with Citus, elastic clusters, or distributed PostgreSQL solutions.

• Exposure to Kubernetes-hosted PostgreSQL, pgvector, or other advanced PostgreSQL extensions.

• Experience supporting SOC 2, HIPAA, or PCI compliance environments.
