AI and DevOps Engineer – Human Capital — The D. E. Shaw Group, New York, NY

OVERVIEW:

The D. E. Shaw group seeks an AI and DevOps engineer to join its Human Capital Generative AI (HC GAI) team. Working at the intersection of people strategy, product design, and emerging AI capabilities, the team builds and operates GAI tools that transform how the firm attracts, assesses, develops, and retains talent, serving both technical and non-technical users across the firm. This role will be HC GAI’s operational backbone, ensuring the health and reliability of the shared infrastructure, applications, and developer tooling that underpin the team’s AI-driven initiatives.

WHAT YOU'LL DO DAY-TO-DAY:

• Oversee deployment and maintenance of HC’s automated reporting products, people-analytics data infrastructure, and data visualizations that give senior business leaders across the firm efficient access to talent insights.

• Manage release and testing processes for HC’s people-analytics tooling and data pipelines.

• Maintain healthy repositories through effective developer onboarding.

• Administer prompt versioning and change control for AI systems, including first-line investigation of feature issues and implementation of prompt updates as needed.

• Conduct AI model evaluations, plan and execute model deprecation strategies, and manage query logging to support ongoing system improvements.

• Maintain and enhance the team’s Claude skills and plugins, ensuring accessibility and functionality for both technical and non-technical users.

• Contribute to the development and maintenance of shared HC GAI infrastructure building blocks—such as LLM gateways, vector stores, and retrieval pipelines—to support scalable and reliable GAI solutions across the firm.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

• A bachelor’s degree in a technical field and at least three years of relevant experience in DevOps, data engineering, or AI operations.

• Fluency in Python and comfort working in a software-engineering environment.

• Familiarity with LLMs and GAI tooling—including prompt design, Claude Code, and Cursor—as well as concepts such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and agentic architectures.

• Demonstrated proficiency in managing deployment pipelines, environment setup, and developer onboarding for data engineering or AI projects.

• Experience with prompt management, version control, and troubleshooting in AI or machine learning environments.

• Familiarity with maintaining plugins and developer tools, and with supporting non-technical users in a collaborative setting.

• Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous, fast-moving environments and drive work forward across cross-functional dependencies.

• Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to partner effectively with technical leads and contribute to operational strategy.

• The expected annual base salary for this position is $150,000 to $200,000.
