Filmmaker & Editor
Macro · New York, NY · Full-time · In-person
The Premise
Macro is a new way for creative teams to collaborate. Instead of separate apps for text, email, video, tasks, docs, etc., Macro brings everything into one beautiful interface, where humans and agents can collaborate to make things together.
The Role
You will work closely with our founder (Jacob) and our creative team to produce commercial, cultural, and narrative pieces for Macro. You will be making tactile software ads, mini-documentaries about our engineers and users, energetic product launch films, brand vignettes, and videos that capture the energy of building things that matter.
We're interested in bringing on 1-2 filmmakers and 1-2 dedicated editors.
If you lean Editor: You know how to take raw interview footage, screen recordings, motion graphics, archival tape, and sound design to build momentum and convey information efficiently.
If you lean Filmmaker: You know how to write, light, frame, and edit people in their natural environment without staging stiff, phony interviews. You can pick the right lenses, capture clean audio, and carry the vision through an edit.
Responsibilities
Write, shoot, and cut original content: From 30-second rhythmic teasers and product launches to 5-minute mini-docs and founder portraits. You will report directly to the founder to discuss what videos to put on your plate and what the company needs from them.
Own the post-production pipeline: Assembly, fine cut, audio mix, color correction, motion typography, and delivery formats optimized across platforms (YouTube, X, LinkedIn, cinema/event displays).
Part Documentarian: Capture spontaneous office moments, hackathons, product ship days, and NYC founder events as they happen, turning them into compelling dispatches.
Craft the sonic and visual identity in motion: Sound design is not an afterthought here—you’ll treat sound effects, production sound, and score (from classical and ambient to synth and electronic) as half the picture. Color grade with intention (mood, contrast, texture).
Who You Are
A serious student of film and editing. You have strong opinions on edits, scripts, soundscapes, and films (from David Fincher to Every Frame a Painting to Wired Autocomplete Interviews).
Deeply technically proficient. You live in Premiere Pro. You know how to organize your bins and hard drives. You understand color grading (LUTs, over-exposing SLOG, order of operations), sound mixing (EQ, compressors), and you're comfortable working with Sony cameras.
Meticulous. The software industry is filled with video slop and we believe our attention to detail will stand out.
Comfortable with technology and tools. You don't need to write code, but you respect the craft of engineering, understand how software products evolve, and know how to talk to developers and designers.
Collaborative. Your work will live alongside the rest of the work made by the marketing team, so you need to be able to express yourself passionately and respectfully within the confines of a brand.
High agency and self-directed. You can take a rough premise for an ad or a 10-minute conversation with the team and come back with a treatment, a storyboard, or a rough cut that surprises us.
NYC-based (or willing to relocate). Our team works in-person in New York (Flatiron / Manhattan). The best material comes from being in the room where the product is built.
Why This Is Different
Creative freedom and real budget: We believe in content that has a personality. We back real production value, and original creative bets.
Equipment and studio support: You will have access to the gear, space, and tools required to make work you are proud to put in your reel.
Culture of craftsmanship: Everyone on the team - from the engineers writing low-level Rust to the designers sketching layouts - cares deeply about quality.
How to Apply
Send an email to (or apply via LinkedIn) with:
1. A link to 1–3 specific pieces you edited (or shot and edited) that you are most proud of. We're looking for the ability to communicate information, not just have cool shots. Add a brief note explaining your role in making each piece.
2. A short note on what in this intersection (film + software) appeals to you. Skip the generic cover letter; just tell us what kind of stories (in the world of software, craftsmanship, or the future of work) you'd be interesting in pursuing.
3. Share a link to an ad you like and tell us why you like it.
