About The Role

Pinterest is seeking a highly skilled and thoughtful Staff Motion Designer to join our Design Innovation team. This role is pivotal in defining and evolving the motion design language that delivers clarity, coherence, and delight across Pinterest’s surfaces and flagship features. It is a hands-on, cross-functional position requiring a unique blend of motion craft leadership, systems thinking, and design technology expertise. The Staff Motion Designer will establish reusable motion principles, patterns, tokens, and implementation guidelines within our design system. Collaborating closely with product and engineering teams, this role addresses complex interaction challenges and develops tools and prototypes to enable exceptional motion at scale. The impact of this position spans from the nuances of individual interactions to the cohesive experience of Pinterest as a whole.

Qualifications

• Minimum 8 years of experience in motion design, product design, interaction design, or a closely related field.

• Portfolio demonstrating exceptional motion craft in shipped digital products or platforms.

• Proven track record at a staff or principal level of influencing cross-team design and product directions without formal authority.

• Deep understanding of motion and interaction design principles, including timing, choreography, easing, spring behavior, feedback, and transitions.

• Experience creating or evolving scalable motion systems such as principles, token sets, pattern libraries, documentation, tooling, and governance.

• Demonstrated ability to partner closely with engineers to implement complex motion within technical and platform constraints.

• Design technologist mindset with proficiency in prototyping tools, AI, and coding or technical workflows to explore ideas and communicate intent.

• Strong product and systems thinking, connecting design decisions to user needs, product strategy, accessibility, and measurable impact.

• Excellent communication and storytelling skills, capable of synthesizing ambiguity and aligning diverse cross-functional teams.

• Collaborative, low-ego approach with a passion for learning, mentoring, and inclusive design.

• Bachelor’s degree in design, animation, human-computer interaction, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Define and evolve Pinterest’s motion design language, including principles, interaction and transition patterns, timing, tokens, specifications, and guidance to ensure motion is intentional, coherent, accessible, and reusable.

• Lead motion direction for flagship and AI-forward experiences, using motion to clarify state, hierarchy, feedback, progress, and system responsiveness.

• Collaborate horizontally with product designers, engineers, product managers, researchers, and content designers to connect feature work to a unified motion strategy.

• Translate high-craft explorations into scalable design system contributions that reduce ad hoc implementation and improve consistency.

• Rapidly prototype and validate motion ideas using motion studies, design tools, code, AI-enabled tools, or custom prototypes to foster shared understanding and accelerate decision-making.

• Work closely with engineering teams during implementation to address ambitious animation challenges while balancing performance, accessibility, platform conventions, and maintainability.

• Develop or enable lightweight tools, templates, and workflows to facilitate quick exploration of visual and motion ideas and reliable animation construction by engineering teams.

• Stay at the forefront of AI-enabled motion and visual creation tools, applying them strategically to improve ideation, prototyping, and production.

• Conduct motion quality reviews, provide actionable feedback, and mentor designers in motion principles, systems thinking, prototyping craft, and engineering collaboration.

• Clearly communicate the rationale, tradeoffs, and user impact of motion decisions to teams, leaders, and executives, building alignment on high standards for motion craft and system quality.
