UDX is a service-disabled veteran-owned small business (SDVOSB) established in 2011 and headquartered in Durham, North Carolina. We operate with a distributed engineering team dedicated to building and maintaining cloud infrastructure and web platforms for organizations where uptime is critical. Our clients include cultural institutions, live event promoters, consumer brands, real estate firms, and professional certification bodies. We specialize in delivering high-availability solutions through Rabbit, our Kubernetes delivery platform, which provisions fully monitored and secured environments across leading cloud providers such as GCP, AWS, and Azure. Additionally, we develop Kubernetes operators available in the Azure Marketplace. Our workflow emphasizes transparency and accountability, with every hour tracked via GitHub issues, changes managed through pull requests, and daily communication documented through comments.
About The Role
We are seeking a skilled Web Developer with expertise in WordPress and Next.js to join our team on a contract basis. The successful candidate will be responsible for shipping production-ready websites from design files to Kubernetes deployments and maintaining a portfolio of active sites post-launch. Projects you will contribute to include business-critical websites such as museum gala and ticketing platforms, live music venue launches, beverage brand portals, and event calendars. Your focus will be on developing custom WordPress themes and plugins, building headless and hybrid front ends using Next.js and React, and integrating essential third-party services. The role requires remote work with overlap during US Eastern business hours to facilitate collaboration and client communication.
Qualifications
• Minimum of four years professional experience building WordPress websites, including custom theme and plugin development using modern PHP.
• Strong proficiency in JavaScript and TypeScript with production experience in Next.js or React, including server-side rendering.
• Experience with Tailwind CSS and responsive design to accurately translate design files into pixel-perfect layouts.
• Familiarity with Git workflows, pull requests, continuous integration checks, and containerized development environments.
• Comfort working within Kubernetes-based deployment platforms (no need to manage Kubernetes directly).
• Experience integrating WooCommerce, event or ticketing platforms, CRM systems, and marketing automation tools.
• Excellent written English communication skills suitable for client interactions and issue tracking.
• Availability to overlap at least four hours daily with US Eastern business hours.
Responsibilities
• Develop custom WordPress sites from design files, including themes, block patterns, custom post types, and necessary plugins.
• Build headless and hybrid front ends using Next.js and React, implementing server-side rendering and CDN caching to handle real-world traffic.
• Manage site launches on the Rabbit platform, including repository setup, branch environment creation, CloudFront and SSL certificate configuration, and post-launch support.
• Maintain a portfolio of live websites by performing WordPress core and plugin updates, addressing performance regressions, and implementing editorial requests.
• Integrate client-dependent services such as HubSpot forms and workflows, ticketing systems, server-side Google Tag Manager, Meta and Google conversion APIs, and email deliverability solutions.
• Create and maintain automated end-to-end test suites using Ghost Inspector to ensure critical site functionality is preserved during releases.
• Track all tasks with GitHub issues, providing daily comments and pull request links to document progress and work completed.
Benefits
• Contract-based engagement with hourly compensation and a steady backlog of multi-client projects.
• Infrastructure management handled by the Rabbit platform, allowing focus on site development rather than server administration.
• Opportunity to work on high-impact websites that are central to clients’ revenue streams, ensuring your contributions are meaningful and visible.
• Direct access to company founders with no intermediaries, enabling swift decision-making and clear communication.
• Remote work with flexible scheduling outside of required US Eastern hour overlaps.
